Twin Peaks Season 3 – Episode 8 aka the WTF episode

So…um, yeah….there’s really no way to put it except this episode was insane.  The previous episode from last week suddenly was narratively clear, it felt like some momentum was being made on both the past and in the current, and it was almost like, oh, maybe it’s going to keep going in that direction.  David Lynch and Mark Frost would like you to kindly take your seat as NO, that is not what is about to happen.

Instead, we were treated to about 10 minutes of super creepy moments with Dark Cooper and Ray, and what seemed like a zig instead of a zag as suddenly, did someone just up and kill Bob?  Cue a Nine Inch Nails concert at the Roadhouse, Bob rising back up, and then, yes, then…1945.  And a nuclear test as seen above….and then?  Lynch did Lynch mixed with Kubrick mixed with who the fuck else knows.  For the next 45 minutes or so, we witnessed a wordless cataclysm, some intriguing imagery at a “Convenience Store”, a weird purple haze sea and building, the Giant interacting with some weird bell while accompanied by some dressed-up woman who looks ready for the opera.  We then do go into the theater and witness creation of BOB (maybe), and then the Giant creates his own thing, which is gold and beautiful and looks to contain Laura Palmer.  Is this the past and is this Laura’s creation?  or is this now and somehow a resurrection?

There’s then a very disturbing sequence of a creature emerging from an egg, the “Woodsman” menacing drivers and then a radio station set to The Platters’ “My Prayer”, what might be Sarah Palmer as a young girl (that was my first hunch too, when I saw the young lovers) who falls prey to the mantra that the Woodsman chants over the radio, and then a bug crawls into her unconscious mouth, and yeah, I’m gonna have nightmares about this episode FOR SURE.

So….who the fuck knows?  It was stunning television, and I kind of think there is a lot that was shown that will perhaps make more sense later.  In the meantime…..WTF.  And I love that Twin Peaks is back.

MEANWHILE……!!!!!! (Twin Peaks returns in 2 days!!!)

25+ years dealing with the ending of Twin Peaks and thinking that was it, having to speculate wildly on what might happen next, and now?  Now, we actually will get to find out.  Will there be actual answers?  With 18 hours of Twin Peaks ahead of us, likely.  But almost without a doubt, this will be a journey of complete weirdness filled with disorienting visuals and themes.  I’m sure I’ll even be like, WTF.  But I eagerly await it regardless.

The World Premiere of this next season on Showtime is happening at the Ace Hotel in DTLA as we speak.

I didn’t make it to this world premiere like I did when the Missing Pieces ultimate blu-ray set had a premiere at the Vista:

Twin Peaks: Up Close and Personal

Talk about an amazing opportunity that was!  But yeah, I didn’t make it downtown this time as this time, the entire world is all about Twin Peaks excitement and the crowd that had assembled for what I saw in 2014 were a small group of diehards.  Can’t even imagine the excitement though at the venue – the pictures from inside look really cool.

I just can’t believe it’s happening.  It IS happening again!!!!

More to come in the next few days – I know I won’t be able to keep myself from writing about the first 4 hours.  Sunday will be insane:  the first 2 hours are getting released on Showtime on Sunday night, but then hours 3 & 4 will be available immediately via Showtime’s streaming apps….so yeah, I’ll be watching those too.  Can’t NOT.  Monday may be painful.

Visiting the Twin Peaks Pop-Up in DTLA

The premiere is being held at this same venue I visited as documented above – you can see my main picture above is from the marquee…only now it’s 2017!!!!!

Oh, and of course I ordered these Twin Peaks FunkoPOP bobbleheads:

Miscellaneous Picture time – because why not?

Larry & I enjoyed last Saturday afternoon’s beautiful temps and weather by finally visiting the outdoor wine bar at the Americana.  Wonderful way to have lunch.  Expensive way, also.

The next day we then went over to Mom’s for Mother’s Day!  Stister Stacie also was there and we had a great time playing Rack-O, drinking some wine, and having some good food.  Barbecued some burgers and hot dogs, Larry made his latest rendition of Blue Smoke-esque mac and cheese (I actually think he did it – no lie.  The secret:  champagne vinegar), I made cookies…it was a good day.

And I think that’s that for now.  Happy Friday and Cobol Wishes!

Trailer Time – April 2017

There’s a lot of exciting stuff headed our way whether it’s TV or Movies, and MAN, I am pumped for some of these things like no one’s business….

First off, Showtime just released this SPOILER-FILLED teaser (for the original two seasons of the show) but it is pushing all the right buttons and man, it’s crazy to think that in ONE MONTH, Twin Peaks Season 3 will begin.  That. is. CRAZY.

So yeah, that’s happening.

Then of course, the movie trailers below are just so fucking awesome and great, and will have to hold us over until the movies themselves are released in the distant fall… First?  Thor: Ragnarok, and believe you me, I would never have believed it myself if you had told me I’d be pumped up for a freakin’ Thor movie.   They’ve been the weakest of the Marvel movies in my mind, and while Thor is obviously attractive, I’ve got Captain America for that.  But this trailer?  Showing Cate Blanchett in all her bad-ass glory?  Set to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”?  Thor cracking wise when he sees Hulk?  Jeff Goldblum goldbluming???  SIGN ME UP.  And it’s on my birthday too, so hey:

I’d be remiss if we didn’t of course talk about effing Star Wars:  The Last Jedi finally releasing a trailer! We finally hear Luke speak!  And know very little else, but it does look great, and things seem kind of bleak with Luke being ‘over it’.  Ready to find out what happens next, finally!

In other news…it’s kind of hard to believe, but Larry & I are close to celebrating our first anniversary.  Where did the time go?  I know, actually, all too well, with work having swallowed it up pretty effectively…but still, kinda shocking.  Life comes at you fast…

Air!

It’s been a rough month or so for me in terms of work. Basically been nonstop in order to try to stay ahead or keep up (it changes, depending on the day), and for quite a few weekends, I would take Saturday off for my sanity but be working from home on Sunday to keep getting shit done.   What have I been doing?  Making myself invaluable in the world of COBOL apparently:

The Inevitable Return of COBOL

Take a gander at that article.  That’s been my life, getting to know the client’s COBOL programs and decipher them into readable pseudocode.  What’s amusing to me is that I honestly might be learning this skill that keeps me gainfully employed; it’s not sexy by any means, but so much still runs on a COBOL backbone and industry is just not really ready to ignore the ol’ adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Anyway, the 3-4 weeks of intensity has managed to finally get lessened due to that hard work.  So that’s been great.  It’s still busy during the week of course, but I have been able to take a full weekend both this one and the last.  Yay!

So, what else has been going on?  Let’s go through some of the pictures, shall we?

Twin Peaks

OH MAN.  So much excitement with Season 3 coming up in like a month.  I have to keep expectations in check, but it’s so exciting to realize we’ll get some answers one way or another so soon.

A few weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly released 3 covers that all had to do with Twin Peaks.  If you lined them all together, you could see they all formed one “last supper”-ish picture of major components of the cast.  When I realized this was happening, I managed to finally get to Barnes & Noble and snag 2 of the 3 covers, but of course the ‘good’ cover was the one I couldn’t find, which was the one with David Lynch, Cooper, Laura and Audrey.  Of course.   I held out one piece of hope though – that Larry’s subscription issue would come with that cover, and happily enough, that turned out to be the case.  All 3 covers were MINE.

I am so freakin’ excited for this.

Here are some more official photos of the covers in their full glory:

In the midst of all my geekery, I went back to Welcome To Twin Peaks and looked at their video links.  One of them was to what has been thus far an amazing analysis series that covers the entirety of the show, and while it leaves a lot of the charming and esoteric details for when watching the show, you can watch this analysis and get a pretty great sense of what has happened in advance of Season 3:

Journey Through Twin Peaks, A 4-Hour Video Essay Exploring The Series, The Film & More

I’d just managed to finish watching through to the recap of winding down from solving the Laura Palmer mystery, and am interested in how it deals with the Windom Earle plot as well as Miss Twin Peaks and the dive into the Black Lodge.  And of course, the frustrating then-“series” finale which is no longer the bane of the show’s existence.  “How’s Annie?”, indeed.

Fun @ WeHo’s Flaming Saddles

This guy is ridiculously hot, and I barely remember it at this point due to the alcohol consumption.

Yeah, so when you make it to one of WeHo’s very festive gay bars, you can rest assured eventually some hot mofo will be dancing around for you to ogle.  And sure enough, a weekend ago, Larry & I got to enjoy that pastime.  Greta was celebrating her birthday and her girlfriend Stacey invited us out to Flaming Saddles, a WeHo outpost of a place we’d also visited in NYC many years back.    Anyway, we had a blast.  After a few pitchers of beer, how could you not have fun?  Drag queens, gays, hot guys dancing around….yeah, you tell me how you can’t have fun.  Well, I can actually tell you the best way to fuck it all up:  add shots.  Larry & I had been drinking $13 pitchers of beer for a while, but of course when it’s a birthday party, people always think you need to add shots.  OOF.  Larry wisely and by necessity passed, but I was like SURE.  Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!  Yeah, I entered the zone of blackout drunk and a 36-hour hangover period.  Day drinking is a fun thing, but it’s not a right.  And you can easily fuck that up if you’re not careful.  Anyway, still a blast, and something I’d love to do again.  Just don’t mix.

If you get the chance to visit some place like Flaming Saddles or the Abbey, I highly recommend it.  What’s not to love?

Work Goes to the Standard Rooftop in DTLA

The new partner overseeing the national practice that I work in came to visit our humble Los Angeles office and meet us.  It was a good day and all of us were in the area so why not have an after-work happy hour atop the Standard Rooftop?  It’s just a block away from where we work, the weather was stunning, and the view was great.

See for yourself!

So that brings us to this weekend.  I’m obviously skipping a lot, but I’ll have to make up that differential with some more posts, like movies we’ve seen, etc.  In the meantime, it’s getting close to bed time and today has been a long one, with our Griffith Park run kicking it off and then a lot of work doing laundry, ironing, watching TV, and well, getting mentally prepared for another week.  Le sigh.

Hope all is going well out there for everyone else in this nutso time we live in.

A Nice Weekend – and Pics from the Last One

Work has been kind of insane this past week, so I never got a chance to post the pictures from Rekha’s birthday and our trip out there for it to Santa Monica.  That situation is finally going to be remedied!  But before that, I have to admit that this weekend….was highly unproductive.  But it was lovely nonetheless.  Yesterday, I spent 8 hours sitting on the couch watching the Twin Peaks Marathon of Twin Peaks Season 1 – god DAMN that show is great.  I kept hoping a surprise new teaser would be revealed, but alas, that Cooper one from Friday is the newest.  But they did iterate through all the trailers thus far released, including the Deputy Hawk one, the Gordon Cole eating a donut one, the eerie Angelo Badalamenti one….so great.  I’m bracing for what Season 3 will actually be – and hoping my expectations can be tempered to just go along for the ride.  With David Lynch, you really have to adjust accordingly.  And 18 HOURS of David Lynch…even with Mark Frost there with him…could be nuts.    I was telling Larry that I kind of wonder if there will be a Drew Barrymore-in-Scream move made…in that one of the major stars from the original series gets killed off.  Maybe someone like Audrey or Shelly?  Eh, just chill.

I instagrammed this pic of my Twin Peaks books during the Season 1 Marathon.

Anyway, last night we went out to Cafe Beaujolais in Eagle Rock, our favorite local French restaurant with the attractive waiters who wear black t-shirts.  It’s wonderful.  Had plenty of wine and man, it just made for a wonderful Saturday night.  Get to feeling good, is all I’m saying.

This morning, we finally made it back out to Griffith Park to go running, and that was my first time out for a run in a few weeks.  Accordingly, only got in about 5.3 miles.  Happily, Larry’s back is feeling good again and he can handle the runs too.  Then we watched The Force Awakens and that movie is still the best.  Now it’s laundry and listening to Mark Hamill on the Nerdist podcast with Chris Hardwick.  Today is chill as fuck and I love it.

Okay, enough rambling – here are pictures!
