Big Brother 14 – Eps 1 & 2

Rather than trying to fit these dissertations in another post, I’ll let them live on their own.  So….BIG BROTHER IS MUTHAFUCKIN’ BACK!!!  It’s the 14th season and while I typically always forget to watch the first episode, lo and behold, I remembered to record it from the beginning this time.  If you’ve never heard of Big Brother, here’s the low-down on how it works:

12 people enter the Big Brother “house”, which is a tightly controlled and completely isolated stage in Studio City that kinda looks like a house.  There is no TV, no books, no phone – no way to interact with the outside world.  Just 12 people left to deal with each other.  Of course, that would get boring after a while.  So what happens is that every week, a “Head of Household” is elected, usually by winning a competition.   That person gets their own bedroom and has immunity.  Immunity from what?  From being kicked out at the end of the week.  In fact, the HoH (Head of Household) has the primary duty of nominating two people for eviction.  Those two nominees then have to scramble and secure votes from the rest of the houseguests in order to stay in the game.  They have an opportunity mid-week to remove themselves from the nominations through the Power of Veto competition.  The nominees, the HoH, and three of the other houseguests (typically randomly chosen) then compete.  If you win the PoV (Power of Veto) competition, you can choose to use it and save one of the nominess (if you aren’t one yourself) or you can decide not to and let the nominations stand.  If you’re a nominee, you’ll obviously take yourself down.  There is a lot of strategy in play at this point as you can do the “backdoor” maneuver, meaning you take one of the nominees down and put up for nomination who you really wanted gone the entire time.  At this point, you’re backdoor’d because there are no more opportunities to save yourself.  At the end of the week (typically  Thursday), the live episode airs and Julie Chen guides the live vote, when we watch the houseguest finally vote to evict someone.   If there’s a tie in the voting, the HoH breaks the tie as they don’t get to vote.  The evicted houseguest has a minute to leave, and then they talk to Julie out in the studio where the live audience is and there’s typically bitchy messages from the remaining houseguests for the evictee.  Rinse and repeat.

BB14: Episode 1 – Thurs, 12 Jul 2012;  Episode 2 – Sunday, 15 Jul 2012

Yet, as we found out at the beginning of this season, and as is typical for all seasons, “expect the unexpected.”  This season, the first twist was that four previous contestants came back as well, this time not competing for the grand prize of $500K, but as coaches to the houseguests.  As additional motivation, $100K is awarded to the coach whose player is the winner.  Which four previous guests came back????  Dan (winner from BB10), Mike Boogie (winner from All Stars/BB7), Janelle (goddess from BB6, All Stars/BB7) and the best news ever, Britney (4th place from BB12)!!!!!  I love Britney, and to have her back and she seems to be basically the same sarcastic, bitchy self she was in her earlier season.  Yay!

The new houseguests all got their intros and blah blah blah, there are gay ones, hot ones, dumb ones, unlikely ones, etc.  They’ll be given names when they actually have personalities to talk about.  The first major thing that happened in Episode 1 was that the coaches did a schoolyard-pick for houseguest that they’d coach.  Here is how it all brokedown:

Coach HG Comments

Britney
Shane – Hot Carpenter. No real read on him yet but he’ll be strong and he’ll probably look hot in a bathing suit.
Willie – Russell Hantz’s obvious brother. Looked to be an early target, but Britney picked him and then made him HoH.
JoJo – Staten Island bartender. Seems to have a good sense of humor and strong survival instincts.

Mike Boogie
Frank – Funny Haired Guy. Competitive and Personable, so he could go far. Boogie’s #1 pick.
Ian – Cute, geeky SuperFan of BB. Could go far if he doesn’t turn out to be psycho.
Jenn – Lesbian Rocker chick. Another one with a great personality and could be a good schemer.

Janelle
Wil – Beautifully-maned Gay Hairdresser. Very competitive and one of my pics to go very far.
Ashley – Hippy chick who does mobile tanning. Is her naivete an act? No clue, but she seems nice.
Joe – Personal Chef. He could be powerful by virtue of that alone if he doesn’t mess it up with a bad personality.

Dan
Danielle – A model. And a completely indistinct personality thus far. One of “Dan’s Girls.”
Kara – Another female who I have no clue about. But she and Danielle are BFF…
Jodi – Newlywed. Looked to be out of her element…and ended up going out first…

Now that you’ve got your gameboard in front of you, here’s basically what ended up happening that first episode – the four groups raced against each other as teams on a bouncy bed obstacle course, with each team member having to traverse the course without falling off on the way. Whichever team finished first was good as the coach of that team got to select the first HoH from his or her team. The team that came in last on this challenge was in a bad spot, as the coach would have to select someone to immediately send out of the game.

Competition Winner:  Britney’s team
Selected for HoH:  Willie
Competition Loser:   Dan’s team
Selected for Immediate Eviction:  Jodi

The official CBS episode 1 recap is here.

We barely knew ya, Jodi!  I don’t think you’ll miss it in the house.  I know that this is one show I’d never be able to handle.   I think Dan chose poorly when he went for females first (no offense, ladies).  But he didn’t have any guys to help him be competitive in the challenge, and now he’s down to two female members while everyone else has three members.  It will be interesting.

In the second episode, things started getting a little bit more scheme-y.  Janelle and Britney bonded immediately (Britney noted that Janelle had been her hero) as they knew that Dan and Mike Boogie had already allied too.  I must admit that Britney made an interesting move naming Willie as HoH.  Everyone would have been gunning for him as they immediately figured out he is Russell Hantz’s brother.  So with him in the power seat, he got the chance to make some loose alliances.   He promised Frank that they’d go far together, but upon further strategizing with both Janelle and Britney, it was clear that Frank was Mike Boogie’s strongest player, due to Frank’s easy personality.   Of Dan’s remaining players, Britney & Janelle reasoned that Kara was his strongest as she was the only one to successfully complete the challenge.  Obviously Willie looked to be in a bind, but he ended up following his coaches’ advice and nominated them both.

There was also a new challenge added to the mix since there are now coaches involved.  In the challenge, the coaches competed against each other in a Coaches Challenge Derby, dressed as horses and having to catch the other racer on the course.  Mike Boogie ended up winning handily, and as his prize, he got to bestow immunity to one of his players.  He gave it to Ian, who definitely could use the help, as Ian’s insane side came out in a big way, with him strangely wandering around the house at night, streaking, and overall just being a tad off.   The coaches also had to establish who were the Have-Nots of the week, and this week each coach had to select one of their team members to be a Have-Not.  Ian also got tagged with this (not a bad trade-off) while hotness Shane, Danielle and Ashley also got selected.  Not only do they eat slop (Big Brother’s version of tasteless oatmeal), they also have to sleep in some crazy-ass eyestrain of a room.  Also, cold showers.  ugh.

Coaches Challenge Winner: Mike Boogie
Given Immunity: Ian
Have-Nots for the Week: Ian, Shane, Danielle, & Ashley
Nominated for Eviction: Frank & Kara

Big Brother really has come back with a bang and I can’t wait to see what happens tonight with the Power of Veto competition!!!!!

COOKIES!!!!

Larry & I fell in love with Britney from Big Brother 12 (that would be two summers ago…yikes!) for basically being the most hilarious, snarky contestant ever on the show.  Ever.   But the line she said that has stuck with us for the last two years – literally, the LAST. TWO. YEARS – is a line she said when being interviewed by EW.com after the show.  She’s ragging on how crazy Rachel is, especially Rachel’s need to be on TV and how she literally  has two faces, one for the camera, one for real life.  Watch below.  IT IS SO FUCKING FUNNY.   Larry helped me cut the original video to just the line, but below that is the actual entire interview, which itself is utterly hilarious.  I wish she had come back for All Stars!

ReaganYouWantSomeCookies

Here’s the whole clip from Youtube (the clip above is right around the 2:43 point):

Why the hell am I talking about cookies?  Because we made some amazing chocolate chip cookies this weekend and whenever cookies are involved, Larry & I will always resort to, “REGAN, YOU WANT SOME COOKIES?????”  And so here I am, back posting, and I had to find this video.

Secret to Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

You want to know the secret to secret perfect chocolate chip cookies?  It’s twofold:

– You must have properly softened butter.  Leave it out overnight.  It’s essential.
– Second, use parchment paper on your cookie sheets.  This prevents the cookies from burning directly on the sheet, making them cook better plus it’s so much less messy this way.  ZOMG.  These are the best cookies ever.

I promise to be back soon with pics from the last two months or so.  I think I’ve found a great efficient way to show off my Picasa-hosted photos and not have them only show up in a teeny-tiny window.  I mean, seriously, who can see them?  I have a little bit of work fixing older posts just to get the photos to display better, but it’ll be worth it.

DAY 2 – AKA One of the Longest Days in a Long Time (MM)

Wow, I’m watching tonight’s episode of Big Brother – Brendon & Rachel are so ridiculous.  I have to admit I don’t want them gone from the house, but they are super silly and I wouldn’t ever want to be locked up in that house with them.  I’ve said it before, but I could never voluntarily do Big Brother or Survivor. Anyway, Rachel is now sobbing about the fact that the Veto competition is bowling.  And she’s sobbing.  She’s sobbing because it’s bowling, and there’s nothing left for her to give. O….M….G.   She feels like roadkill.  Is this for real?  Is someone feeding her lines???  I haven’t been recapping BB like I have in seasons past, but don’t ever doubt that I’m not watching it.

Today was a long day.  This morning at 9am I volunteered some time to Operation BackPack, which is an effort to collect backpacks and school supplies in order to get them to underprivileged kids.  It felt good to do some stuff for others.  My group has been doing this kind of stuff as a way to do some good as well as some bonding.  We also head out to breakfast every few weeks at some Manhattan famous breakfast place.  Our group rocks  The volunteering effort was fun, but physical, with lots of boxes that needed to be schlepped around and opened and such.  So at 1pm, we headed back to work, and there’s all SORTS of drama happening there.  I just don’t care anymore.  I’m ready for it to be over, however it ends.

Anyway, I just got back from New Jersey as Larry & I went to celebrate his grandmother’s 90th birthday.  We had dinner at the River Palm, an AMAZING place to get some prime rib.  YUM.  And I intend to be on track to at least post twice in a row…so on to Day Two’s item:

Day 01 | Your favorite song

Day 02 | Your favorite movie

Kinda like my favorite song, I don’t watch it all that often anymore, but it has been my favorite movie for quite a while now.  Certainly Superman, Empire Strikes Back, and Beetlejuice are really high up there, the #1 in my mind is Moulin Rouge!.  Oh Moulin Rouge!, you were never a popular favorite with the masses, but with me, I was instantly in blissful love.  I first saw an HBO First Look special on it before I ever saw the movie in the theater.  After hearing about the performances of existing songs (<cough>, <cough> GLEE <cough>) and the fantastical staging and direction, I was definitely intrigued. When it finally came out in the summer of 2001, I bought my ticket opening weekend.  Then the strains of the Can Can played, along with some familiar refrains from the Sound of Music, and I was hooked.  Over the next two hours, I was treated to exciting, colorfully audacious numbers as well as an incredible love story.  Believe you me, I still end up sobbing at the end of the movie.  It’s heartbreaking.  I think my most favorite scene is the Can Can number set to a hyperkinetic version of Lady Marmalade when the Moulin Rouge club is introduced.  Orgasmic.  Such amazing choreography!  I’m so excited about the fact that Moulin Rouge is headed to a Blu-Ray version by the end of this year.  SWEET.

And oh yeah, Rachel on BB12 is INSANE.   Insane!!!

Summertime in the City (MM)

So here’s the scoop and to catch you up on what’s been going on during this dreadfully hot summer so far:

  • I don’t have a Schlotzky ring.  After the endoscopy, the Doc told me that his initial guess was wrong.  Instead, and after verifying with the lab who analyzed the biopsy, it turns out I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis, which is typically associated with allergies.  So I went and saw an allergist.  Besides nuts, which I didn’t need to take a painful test for, I did find out I’m allergic to Soy.  Hmmm.  At least it wasn’t chicken.  One other thing – going under anasthesia is such a bizarre experience.  You honestly have no idea you were unconscious until it’s over and you’re waking up.  I do NOT like that feeling.
  • This year’s summer in NYC is awful.  It’s hot, and it’s humid, and I can’t run my A/C and watch TV at the same time as it blows out my fuse in the apartment.  That….sucks.
  • Larry & I have been managing to get out and see and do things.  Lots of pictures can you show things like the Billy Joel booze cruise, etc.  But we also went and saw another Broadway show finally.  On the July 4th weekend, we went down to TKTS and got discounted tickets for Promises, Promises, which ended up being a very good and entertaining show.  It is so wonderful to see Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes in person too.  They’re both very talented.  The Tony-award winning supporting actress though really made the show, as her character was this boozy bar dame who hits on Sean Hayes’ character.  SOOO funny.
  • Work has been stressful and good all at the same time.  Hopefully we’ll be hiring people soon.  Found some decent folks finally.  It would be nice to have a full team again. Just sayin’. I may be headed back out to Los Angeles in the early part of August.
  • Will be seeing Pat in the beginning of August, which is cool.  Hopefully the weather is a bit more bearable!
  • Finished up my second Beginner’s Guitar School course.  I am pretty proud of how much progress I’ve made in playing the guitar.  It’s funny remembering how awkward it was to just strum a chord or two, and now I feel a lot more confident in being actually able to play a song.  Our last song that we played as a “recital” was Jack Johnson’s “Wanting, Waiting, Wishing” song which is fun and challenging to play.  We did a good job at it. I’m hoping to fit in one more course before leaving for Los Angeles for good.  I’d like to get in some more core knowledge from this school, as it is a great place to learn.  Everyone’s so upbeat and positive about guitar there.

And that’s pretty much the most of what’s going on. I hope you’re watching Big Brother 12 like I am.  It’s not the best season at this point, but it’s BB, so it’s of course entertaining.  My favorites now are Britney as she’s so bitchy and funny, as well as Lane, as he’s just big and kinda cute.  Brendon was high on my list before as the man is just beautiful, but he’s quite the idiot, and not in a lovable Jeff from BB11 way.  Rachel is sorta growing on me, but that laugh can peel paint off the wall.  Ugh.

Vegas, then New York City! (T-30)

I’m off to Vegas for a few days of fun and debauchery – then I’m off to NYC for my 2nd Interview with NBC!

I’ve been writing about my career search in the Shooting Gallery and will keep it up to date as things go down. NYC will definitely be an awesome opportunity, but if I can’t sell my house…it will be much easier honestly to stay here in Colorado, perhaps. Now that I’m exactly 30 days away from being out, well, it’s a lot more of a reality that I have to find a job!!!! Anyways, here’s the link again if you’re interested:
Shooting Gallery Thread on my Career Search

Besides working on finding a career, there hasn’t been much going on, to be honest. Especially since I was all Mr. Joe Travellots when I went to Chicago and San Diego. But this upcoming week will be interesting, for sure. And then it’s time to say ByeBye to Air Force. Crazy! In the meantime, I seriously can’t wait to go to Vegas – in store for that vacation: gambling, drinking, Hofbrauhaus, pool-lounging, dancing, etc. It’s gonna be awesome.

Anyways, just wanted to check in and let you know what I’m up to. I’ve been watching Big Brother 8 like a fiend as well and commenting on it in the Shooting Gallery here:

Also, I finally started posting on DVD Talk’s forums, specifically on Big Brother 8. I’ve been reading that site since 2000, and hadn’t posted until now – it’s a fun audience to discuss the show with, that’s for sure. Especially since no one here in my little crowd is willing to admit they watch the show!!!! Here’s the DVD Talk Big Brother 8 forum thread if you’re interested. They’re already up to 700 posts!!!
