11-11-11, Sciatica & Mykonos (2011 Trip) Pics!

It’s a weird-looking date hence there’s all sorts of things that wanted to have this as a momentous date, incidentally for some and totally intentional for others.

Incidentally? It’s Veteran’s Day (yay soldiers and airmen and seamen and marines!) and it’s all-the-way-up-to-volume-11 Spinal Tap day too.  Intentionally?  Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The HP7 Pt2 Blu-Ray, and Immortals came out.  I’m excited for the first two…the last one, maybe if we could watch it on mute.  I’ve read that there are plenty of Greek soldiers who don’t know how to wear a shirt in it.  That’s always a good thing.

I’ve been playing GTA4 and Tropico 4 a lot lately, then dabbled just a bit in Skyrim this morning but I can not let myself get absorbed.  Must try to get through these in due time.

Oh yeah, if you know or care about my sciatic nerve problems, my MRI revealed that indeed I do have a tear in one of my spinal vertebrae discs, about 5mm in length.  The resulting glob of goo from the disc is now pushing up against the bunch of nerves coming out from the spine and, you guessed it, one batch is that set of nerves that runs down my right leg.  OH THE FUN.  My options per the doctor are surgery, steroid injections, or let it heal some more/physical therapy.  He advised against the first two as the rationale was that in two years, all options will result in the same relief.  And surgery and steroid injections all have additional risks and such associated….so I did opt to continue with trying to get better with time.  I can admit that the pain has reduced, although my days go from pretty good to pretty bad.  And lately, trying to get out of bed has been horrendous – I’m not sure what is causing it but it’s insane.  I have a feeling that because I doubled up on the Gabapentin at night, I move around more than I should and when the Gaba wears off, the pain comes roaring in.

I bought a seat cushion that has a cutout right where your ass-crack is;  apparently that is to allow your spine to not get that upwards pressure from the seat as just your asscheeks are sitting while the spine can sorta sit through it?  I don’t know, I am using it now and I am feeling way better when sitting than I did previously, so perhaps I’ll need to swing by the medical supply store and pick two more up, one for the car and one for the office….  Anyway, once my pain is such that is nearly minimal, I can start some physical therapy to strengthen my core.  Who knows, maybe I’ll get a six-pack….like this guy:

Hey, it’s Veteran’s Day, and this guy has dogtags on, so I bet he must be a Veteran too…. heh heh…

Alright, enough hotness from random strangers for you.  Here are some well-deserved pics from Larry & my trip around the Eastern Mediterranean – this time from the lovely and fantastic spot of Mykonos, Greece.  It really is amazing how wonderful the weather was the entire trip.  Sure, it was effing hot, but there wasn’t any rain nor any gloomy days, except for the day at sea which was coming up the day after Mykonos.  But who cares, right?  That’s what the inside of a massive cruise ship is there for.

June 22, 2012 Update:  I think that the captions of the photos for this particular excursion are sufficient to describe the adventure on this day.  It was a great day and full of beautiful Greek island scenery.  One of the fun highlights was while eating lunch on the Mykonos coast before heading back to the ship.  Lots of people-watching (aka checking out hot guys).  The ship left in the afternoon so when we got back, there was time to go hang out by the pool which was a fantastic way to drink and soak up the rays.  Some times, you just need to put your feet up, listen to the music, and enjoy the sun.

Art & Sand

Art & Sand…the next breathtaking saga from the pen of famed novelist Hobie Barnes….ah, as if.  I still can not figure out just how to write a novel.  Have I actually tried to write one?  No.  But I don’t even have an idea of what to write about in a book.  Fiction or non-fiction, doesn’t matter.  But I do love to read, so that’s good.  Speaking of which, Game of Thrones is awesome.  It’s taking forever for me to get through but it’s not because it’s slow.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  It’s just I’m only reading at lunch breaks and sometimes on Saturday mornings before Larry is awake.  All other time distractions are now occupied by video games.  Seriously.

Art & Sand actually refers to how we spent our weekend.  Surprisingly, it rained in Los Angeles.  On Friday, we had on and off rain showers (and I also got an MRI – hopefully I’ll learn more about what was found this week).  I worked from home as well, I have no patience for the incompetence that is displayed when LA drivers meet rainy conditions.  My nerves can’t deal with it, and to then have to drive on the 101 AND the 405?  Yeah, no.  On Saturday, it also was raining in the morning, but stopped and the skies cleared to reveal a beautiful day.  So we went to LACMA as there is a new exhibit there called California Design, part of an initiative around many Los Angeles museums called Pacific Standard Time.  The LACMA’s piece showed a great collection of furniture, art and items that sprang up in the unique Southern California culture from the 40s, 50s and 60s.  Think of what you would see in any movie from that period and that’s kind of what you would see here in this exhibit.  Lots of Eames furniture which Larry in particular loved and I got to see a Hobie surfboard!  Pictures from my collection below:

The afternoon was followed by a great Mexican food dinner later that night at our local favorite Mexican food place, Lares Restaurant.  Great margaritas and really really good carnitas.

On Sunday, it was raining yet again!  It’s LA people, it doesn’t rain here.  The rain cleared out yet again by mid-morning, and I had wanted to go walking as that’s really all I can do for exercise with the state my sciatic situation is in.  And the scenery to walk around here in is second to none, so taking advantage of the beautiful weather, we went out and about to the Santa Monica Beach.  At the pier, we finally took advantage of the fact that there’s a theme park there and went on the ferris wheel.  Great views are definitely there to be had.  It was a great way to spend a few hours in the afternoon – then got home and for dinner Larry made a pizza.  It was a good post-birthday weekend.   Pics are here:

And Grand Theft Auto IV is ruling my life.  WTH?  All these new games come out and NOW is when I decide to play this 3-year old game?  And Arkham City and Uncharted 3 sit on the sidelines….glaring at me…?  Strange.

35 years and 1 day

Yesterday was my birthday – the birthday in which i turned 35.  In many polls and surveys when you have to choose which age group you are in, I think I just lapsed into the next group up!  No longer do I get the joy of filling in the 18-34 bucket….now it’s 35 – dead.  Le sigh.

My birthday was on a Thursday, so not really time for a crazy party, and I was at work too. Feh.  But at home, Larry was hard at work as he not only made me a fantastic dinner of steak, asparagus and delicious au-gratin potatoes (with montepulciano wine too), but also birthday cupcakes!!!! Here are pics of all the fun:

I am a very lucky guy.  Don’t be too jealous that I get to eat so well….with my sciatic problems, I’m gaining plenty of weight.  Damn you and your delicious cooking, Lawrence!

Speaking of that sciatic issue, I went this morning….EARLY this morning to the UCLA Imaging center to get an MRI.  I’d never got one before and my mom had warned me that it’s best to just close your eyes as it can start to get a little claustrophobic. Indeed, she was right.  It’s a tad spooky to get loaded into this tube where the tube wall is just inches from your body and face.  Then you have to hold still for 20 minutes while this machine is getting all bangy around you.  Luckily they give you an option to listen to the radio so I was able to enjoy the random stylings of Jack FM during the ordeal.  Hopefully that MRI will reveal what’s truly the problem in my back and can lead to what happens next, whether it’s therapy or surgery.  Or just cut my leg off.

In totally other stories, did you see the new Grand Theft Auto V trailer?  It’s definitely set in Los Angeles, I mean Los Santos.  No idea when it’s coming out though or who you play as.  But can’t wait, either way:

And if you get the chance, check out the Bad Lip Reading videos on Youtube….the one on Rick Perry is especially priceless as is the Russian Unicorn one (a take on Michael Buble’s “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” —- AWESOME song).

In another post today, I’m going to display the gallery of images from Part 2 of our office re-do adventure!

A new Grand Theft Auto!

These Are the Best Cities For the Next Grand Theft Auto.

So Rockstar has indicated that there will be a Grand Theft Auto V – on November 2nd, a game trailer will be released revealing more, hopefully.  With the way the V/Five looks, my guess immediately went to the game being set in Washington, D.C., but other signs with it being the text you see on currency leading some to think it’s Wall Street-esque, so maybe it’s back in Liberty City.   Most rumors, before this logo was ever released, predicted it would be in Los Santos (Los Angeles) again….which if so, yay!   Kotaku thinks that in line with previous release schedules, this game wouldn’t come out for another year after the first trailer, so that’s good, as there are just too many games to play at the moment.  Batman: Arkham City is INSANE and then Uncharted 3, Assassin’s Creed:Revelations, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are all coming in November.  Oy vay.
