The Return of Community!

What a wonderful treat!  Community is back on this wondrous St. Patrick’s Day holiday after it’s cancellation on NBC and save by Yahoo!  I just finished watching the first 2 episodes that are available and I have to say, the show is absolutely fantastic.  I laughed a lot and not like the pity-laughter you sometimes do when you really want to like something and find you just don’t.  That was probably what a lot of my Season 4 laughing was due to; but Season 6’s inaugural episodes are flat-out hilarious.

I do miss Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), but they’ve managed to honor her character and address a lot of the meta-issues head on.  The addition of Paget Brewster as Frankie is really good, as she’s quite funny herself trying to be the normal person within this Greendale group.  The second episode sees the introduction of Keith David and he’s of course great.  I’m happy to see that there are some good character developments occurring too, especially with Britta, at least so far.

Watching it on Yahoo! Screen hasn’t been a terrible thing, although I certainly would like to search out on if Yahoo! Screen is something that can be installed as an app on the Samsung SmartTV section.  I just like when I can enjoy this kind of goodness in a bit bigger of a picture.  Hopefully if it’s not available on the TV, that perhaps Apple TV or the PS4 will have it.  Anyway, Community is back and I love it and you should too!

Community Has Been Re-Enrolled

I had a post about this previously, but for a disconcerting unknown reason, that post is now gone.  I am thrilled that Community is going to come back for a sixth season, if only for it to fulfill the promise of SixSeasonsAndAMovie.  It’s going to be through Yahoo!, which is still something I’m not sure how to watch at this point – I am pretty sure my TV has a Yahoo Application, but I guess we’ll see how it goes when all that happens.  It’s just great news though and I’m glad pretty much all involved are coming back, including Dan Harmon.

RIP Community

So bummed – it was the little show that could, but it finally couldn’t escape its ultimate fate of cancellation, 5 seasons in.

In addition to my beloved Community, another of my favorite shows this year was given the definite axe after having been put on hiatus, Enlisted. Boo!!!! Perhaps there’s a chance of survival on another network for Community – maybe TBS or something.  But I’m not holding my breath.  I’ll just have to enjoy the memories and the DVDs.

Paleyfest 2014: Community

Larry & I bought tickets for the Community Paleyfest 2014 panel this past week, after Nicki had brought it up a few days ago.  It was pretty easy to realize, “hey, I DO want to go see the showrunners and cast in person and hear cool stories and possibly get cool surprises”, so we bought tickets!

It was a fantastic experience.  First, it was held in the Dolby Theater, the current home of the Academy Awards.  So that was pretty damn sweet.  Second, it was awesome to get a chance to see and listen to Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna, Community‘s showrunners, and Joel McHale (Jeff Winger), Jim Rash (Dean Pelton), Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley), Danny Pudi (Abed), and Gillian Jacobs (Britta) talk about the show and tell funny stories.  Third, surprises!  Before the panel came out, they showed us the entirety of an upcoming episode, Part 1 of the 2-part season finale (let’s hope it’s a season finale and not a series finale).  It was a really good episode and the best part was being able to watch it with hundreds of like-minded Community fans.  After the panel was complete, we then got to see the first peek at the G.I. Joe-themed upcoming episode for next week, which was a hilarious PSA from Buzzkill/Britta and Fourth Wall/Abed.

One of the things that was crystal clear as we were enjoying the panel discussions was that Dan Harmon is amazingly hilarious and quite obviously the heart and soul of the show.  Season 4 (the gas-leak year) certainly was a massive decline but it had still enjoyable elements, but with his return in Season 5 along with the corresponding improved quality, it’s such a joyous return to form.  And it’s all because of his creative spark along with such a talented cast who bring it when it needs to be brought-ed.

So here are my pics from the Community panel at Paleyfest 2014:

Ah, Community!

Last night, the super wonderful folks of NBC (blatant sucking up, yes) started airing the beginning of the fifth season of Community!   It’s a crazy miracle we are even having a fifth season, to be honest, as it has a very tortured behind-the-scenes story that would probably make a good True Hollywood Story one day.   But to make it brief, after the third season, Sony Studios and NBC ended up firing the creator, Dan Harmon, from the show.  So the fourth season was run by people who had been working on the show before, but unfortunately for them, Community really is a show that reflects what Dan Harmon wants it to.  Much of Season 4 was missing something, even though it was still fairly enjoyable.  But somehow after Season 4 was finished, money was exchanged, favors were promised, or calves were sacrificed, and Dan Harmon was un-fired and reinstated as the showrunner of Community for Season 5.  Also, Chevy Chase was asked not to come back.  So despite all this drama and fairly poor ratings, relative to CBS shows at the same time, Community came back.  It helps Community that NBC’s other shows on Thursday can’t find an audience and Community outranks those.  So yay!

Anyway, last night there were 2 episodes aired, and it did feel like things were “back.”  The first episode, “RePilot,” figured out a way to bring the cast (sans Chevy Chase, kinda) back to Greendale Community College, while the second episode, “Introduction to Teaching,” expands on one of those reasons, namely that Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) is now a teacher there.  I don’t think I’m cut out to do TV reviews, so I’ll drop a link here for the A.V. Club’s amazing review and comments section, which is where you’ll find the most insightful yet obsessive comments and discussions around for this show, as well as many others.

I’m just glad the show is back, and dammit, I really want it to make it to #sixseasonsandamovie!
