Santa Monica Office Re-Do, Part 1

It was a VERY productive weekend for me & Larry.  Exhausting and expensive, but well worth it.

The first part of Saturday was spent fulfilling my deal to my mom for her birthday, which was to get her a new TV.  I bought it from Best Buy earlier in the week and luckily they do a hold until you pick it up, so we swung by the Duarte Best Buy, got the TV (and soundbar and Blu-Ray player), and then began the process of bringing them into the 21st century.  First we moved her old TV up to their bedroom and set that up, then got the new system all setup downstairs.  There may be a time for getting used to the new system, but I think all parties are happy with being able to clearly see the programming as well as hearing it clearly too!  I have to admit, the soundbar’s performance way exceeded what I was expecting.  For a low cost, you can get some really good surround-type sound with a very strong center.

But Saturday wasn’t over yet, as once the training was done at Mom’s, we were off to IKEA in Burbank.

Larry had been wanting to finally take care of our office as honestly, it was one of the places in our apartment in which it was functional, but hardly something we were proud of walking through, especially with guests.  There’s just a lot of shit everywhere.  And if you’re trying to go to the roofdeck, you have to navigate through our mess. And if you’re drunk and going through the office to the roofdeck, it’s even worse!

So Larry spec’d out an office layout with new desks, bookshelves, and storage/filing units.  He used IKEA’s pretty decent website to basically figure out what we needed, as well as built a shopping list with aisles and bin numbers that made our process that much easier.

Have you ever been to IKEA?  I admit I’m a relative newbie when it comes to the whole IKEA methodology.  In fact, I had not purchased anything from them until the beginning of this year when we got the bathroom cabinet and nightstands.  It’s insane how big these stores have to be.

  • You have Phase 1, which is when you walk through the showroom, perusing all the different room areas and seeing what things you like.  The key is that you need to take good notes, indicating particularly the part # you need/want, AS WELL AS the associated aisle and bin.  Otherwise you’re going to be hopeless in Phase 3.  But I jump ahead of myself.  In this phase, you also have to consider all the options available to you, with regards to furniture color, accessories like handles and legs/frames, door styles, etc.  Fortunately, most combinations are well represented so you aren’t totally lost as to what your setup would look like.  So yeah, long list time.  If you can get an IKEA planner dude though, that is AWESOME.  They know exactly what they’re talking about and what you’ll need.  We did that for our stuff here just to be sure we had what we needed, and he made us great lists to consult.  Only thing is that his list didn’t have aisle and bin numbers.  Thank God that Larry’s shopping list did.
  • Then there’s Phase 2 – the Marketplace.  After you made it through the Showrooms, you go downstairs and find all the things you can buy as is (i.e., without assembly).  Here’s where all the cheap and tantalizing knick-knacks are that you absolutely MUST have.  Buyer beware, not because it’s crap, but because you’re going to buy stuff and be powerless against any urge to not.  It’s just as big as the showroom too. After you meander through the Marketplace, it’s time for Phase 3.
  • Yes, Phase 3 – the warehouse.  Egads – this can be intense if you weren’t taking good notes in Phase 1.  Because now is when you need to have those aisles and bins clear and at the ready.  You first get a big flatbed cart where you will store your assorted boxed goods.  We got two this time, because, well, we were VERY ambitious for our office project.  When you find your aisle, then it’s bin location time – not only that, it’s time to make sure you’re getting the right part #, as there are many options.  So yeah, notes in Phase 1 are essential.  Aisle, Bin, and Part # – write them down.  Then begin the process of schlepping the boxes off the shelves and onto your flatbed.  Rinse and repeat for each and EVERY part….and there will be lots, as drawers don’t come with fronts, that’s an option up to you to decide, so it comes separate.  Etc etc etc.
So on this particular adventure, we had two full desks and accessories, two full filing cabinet sections, and two low bookcases.  Whew.  Lots of stuff…and while I thought we did a perfect job of inventorying and getting everything….we missed ONE piece.  Out of 34 total though, not too shabby.  I can live without a file cabinet front in the meantime – luckily I work relatively near the IKEA in Burbank so I can pick it up then.  Poor Larry got an injury though – IKEA has a taste for blood….evil bastards.  When he went to grab a box filled with lots of heavy boards for building a file cabinet base, the cardboard box broke and heavy pieces within flew out and slammed into his foot.  Once we got home, it looked like his big toe had taken quite a beating – nothing broken, but hella bruised and it’s possible his toe nail may not stick around.  Every time I mention that last part to him, he gets a bit queasy.
Anyway, neither of us have a truck so we paid the $60 to get all that crap delivered the next day.  So Sunday was project day!  We thought we might be able to do it all today, but after knocking out the cube bookcases relatively easily, the file cabinets kicked our ass and drained us of our motivation for the big kahunas, the desks.  This week though, we’ll get it done.  And with no more further ado, the pics from Part 1 of our IKEA office adventure…..found in full at the Picasa web gallery linked here:

Two questions:
1) Whose Sully monster is that? BECAUSE I LOVE SULLY.
2) What is that phone in the wall? Is that like the BatPhone? Are you guys secret Super Heroes? Because it’s probably a bad idea to post pictures of your Super Hero Lair on the internet; you don’t want the bad guys to see it. C’MON GUYS, SUPER HERO OPSEC!!

ZOMG, it’s Super Jenny! I wasn’t sure you had made it to the new site. N-E-Wayz….answers:
– Probably 95% of the toys up there are Larry’s and Sully is indeed his!
– That phone is hilarious – it’s the intercom system. We have one on each level – and it allows us to talk quietly to each other. We can also talk to the person at the door, if we want to be all mysterious-like. Or this was all a lie and I have to erase your brain.

I love your Top Secret Intercom Phone. You guys should put a picture frame on the wall around it, and then hang a little sign next to it that says “Definitely NOT a Super Hero Hotline Phone. Really, I swear.” You know, to fool the bad guys.

Also, Larry’s Cool Points have gone up about 7000 levels. Sully is my favorite Pixar movie dude!
