Not What You’d Call….

….Photogenic, for one. Seriously, I love TAKING pictures, but jesus pleazus, I am appalling to the human eye in pics, especially lately. And especially when I drink a little. My god, could I get any more damn veins in my head? And oh, maybe I could lather my face in some french fry grease to just make sure I win the GreasyFace2008 Face Of The Year Award. It’s enough to make a person want to say, “No Paparazzi” but when you’re your own Paparazzi, you then look like you’re talking to yourself.

.Smooth, for another. So it’s been going good with Steve. Really. I know, right? But I seem to have a way with not only never saying the right things but also LOVING to sabotage my own life. Take for example this weekend. We hadn’t planned on seeing each other this weekend as he was supposed to go on a ski trip and that worked out fine because Jason was coming into town for a quick visit with the friends he has out here in NYC (which now includes me!). Then Steve’s ski trip was cancelled, so we could now hang out at least on Saturday. And we did and it was a lot of fun – went to the Guggenheim Museum (my first time there – very cool exhibit there: here’s a link to the Museum’s website where it talks about it in more detail). Anyways, the talk went to some things that I’m apparently retarded about. It’s from lack of experience in these matters, but seriously, I’d really hate to ruin such a great thing I’ve got right now with my retardation. I’m striving not to let it, so I will have to make sure I fight my own tendencies to sabotage my happiness. Stupid Hobie.

….Reliable on a Weekend. You know, I just deleted a whole paragraph of information that I realized I really shouldn’t put online. But needless to say, I’ve got some things that I am learning I better have handy at all times.

…..Unhappy. I’m really not unhappy right now. There’s lots of crap still happening out there in my work and personal life, but compared to where I was a few weeks ago, things aren’t ridiculously shitty. Some things have happened elsewhere that make me realize I need to ‘Be Prepared’. My own interpersonal dealings have made me glad that I tend to be more honest and upfront than not. Even with what I’ve said to Steve, I’m glad I said things rather than not. It’s best to have the more uncomfortable conversations than to try to ignore them.

Okay, that’s all the conclusions I’ve got to the sentence above for now. Here are some pics from this weekend. As I mentioned, I got a chance to see Jason for a few days as he was out in DC for his job this week and then took a bus up here to hang out with his NYC friends (including me!). He’s doing great as usual, and what’s great is that our friendship is always one of those fun things to have.

Here’s to a good week, to me and to everyone out there!

Don’t Jinx It

I’m afraid to even talk about this but fuck it, what’s the worst that could happen – I could go back to being single again? Pssh…been there, done that.

That date I went on last week? Well – we’ve been nonstop in touch with each other every day since. And it’s amazing. Someone who I have feelings for and who returns them back with just as much intensity. A wicked sense of humor about others and himself. Very cute. And he’s not imaginary. His name is Steve. And he’s awesome. That is all for now.

Whatcha Know ‘Bout Me?

Free mp3 alert! You don’t really too many choices of songs to pick from but that lyric above is from Mama’s Sister, this deliciously awesome mashup of a Scissor Sisters tune titled ‘I Can’t Decide’ with a hip-hop song from Lil’ Mama called LipGloss – and it’s brilliant. I can’t get it out of my head.

The RIAA isn’t going to come after you or me for downloading it, as it’s not something for sale anyways. And here’s the link to the website where you can download the entire album called Da-Tah. Basically these folks did a mash-up of the entire Scissor Sisters Ta-Dah album with all sorts of songs. If you’ve heard the song, I Don’t Feel Like Dancin (a brilliant song, by the way), they mash this song’s tune up with Beck’s Loser. Incredible.

I found on the original website a music player I can embed here – you gotta click on #3 at least!

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve updated – it’s been a bit hectic in all aspects of life.

First – Mom is doing a lot better and with some good medication, she’s been rapidly getting better and should be going back to work very soon. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s a huge relief.

Second – I’m surviving at work. It’s been crazy busy. My sorrow at Jim’s leaving has been replaced by anger as I find out more stuff but whatever, I’ve got a job to do and I’m getting it done. Things are getting delayed a little bit here and there, but honestly, I’m gonna get this REACT program out there one way or another!!!

Third – I ended up meeting this new guy online that I have been communicating with for the past week or so – and we went out last night. It was a fantastic time.

Fourth – Shelly and I have been trying to get out on our own sort of ‘date’ – we’re trying to at least go out in the middle of the week and have a dinner out and just try to break up the craziness of our work week. I’ve been trying to find places within my 1001-things-to-do in NYC book to go to – so this last week we went to The Odeon, which is a fairly well-known restaurant here. Great food – and it really is nice to just have a night out with me and Shelly where we can just have fun and relax and try to recharge. Plus, getting out of the house is nice too.

Fifth – Taxes this year are devastating. Primarily because of the VSP. Luckily I saved most of that money but still – I really am not happy about having to write a check to basically EVERY entity: the IRS, California, New Jersey AND New York. That VSP income put me in such a different tax bracket that it raped me for every other thing. 2007 taxes = suck.

Sixth – since I’ve been busy as hell, I really haven’t done much else. At least of real note. I’ll do better with the updates, hopefully!

Obama voter in New Jersey

I cast my vote in New Jersey’s primary tonight after work – I have no need to keep it secret: Barack Obama is who I’d love to see as our next president.

There is a distinct part of him that I respond to, and I think it’s the fact that he has a natural leadership and charisma about him that all the other candidates do NOT have. Because in terms of what either Hillary or Barack have as their positions – those are really very close. So of course it comes down for me to something less black-and-white (so to speak). And having been in the military for a bit, there’s a quality a few people just naturally have and that is the ability to lead people, seemingly effortlessly. To me, Barack Obama has that quality. I’m most definitely ready for a change in our government, and to have someone who, in my mind, has that natural leadership quality is a strong, huge factor for me. You may have noticed that I didn’t even mention the Republican candidates. You noticed correctly. Huckabee will NEVER get any vote from me. Romney is the epitome of a snake-oil-politician to me in my mind…. which leaves McCain. I respect him for his military service, and for his earlier ability to do what seemed to be in the best interests of the people. But with the latest campaign pledges, it just seems that the Republican nominees are falling all over themselves to be the most conservative… which in today’s day and age means that whoever is the most homophobic, pro-war, anti-Roe v Wade candidate wins! Now I’m sure I’ve pissed off some of you out there – too bad, so sad. I’ve got my opinion, and luckily for me, I pay for it by funding this website by myself…so I can say whatever the hell I want. Don’t read my site if Hobie2008 (and late 2007) offends you.

It was nice to cast a vote – I honestly haven’t voted in a long time. I guess I’ve been registered in California for the longest time and they’ve stopped even trying to send me Absentee ballots. But when I did all the registering here in New Jersey, I decided to just do it all. I had to hustle from work though tonight, and just did a quick workout and then got caught in the 6-7pm rush. But I then walked from Port Imperial to the staircase that leads from the River area up to the Palisades, as that’s where my voting precinct location was. As I walked up these stairs for the first time, I looked back out towards NYC and nearly fell over from the view I had before me. As the photo-junkie I am, I always have my good camera with me and no sooner did I finish voting (completely soaked in sweat too – I must have freaked out the voting attendants – but I had just hustled up a few hundred steps or so in my work clothes!) did I go out to the park overlook up on the Palisades and take the following shots. There were a few more, but these were the ones that turned out amazing. I especially like them because you can see my building in the foreground. I truly do live in an amazing location with a stellar view!

I almost thought about bailing on voting tonight, but I remembered what I had passed up to do this and there was no way I was going to have passed that up just to be a pussy and not continue voting. Still not 100% positive that I made the right choice, but I know there will be more opportunities to do what I missed. And I am not going to get into details. 😉

Before I leave, this past weekend was pretty fun! Well, Saturday was. Sunday was miserable as I again was hungover. On Saturday, I hung out with Greg and two of his friends, Daniel and Nicholas. They were very cool and it was great to meet more people that I get along with – hopefully expanding my social circle slowly. I think I fit in well with them all. I will have to say I think I will definitely reconsider oyster shooters in the future though…. It’s like swallowing a chunky bit of snot. ugh. And did you see that Super Bowl? I was definitely rooting more against the Patriots (Tom Brady’s perfectness is more than annoying) than rooting for the Giants, but by the 4th Quarter, I was firmly rooting for the Giants. Even me, who is extremely apathetic to football, couldn’t help getting into that game! As for the commercials, my favorites were definitely the Justin Timberlake Pepsi one and the giant Macy’s Thanksgiving balloon Coke one. I couldn’t believe some of the obscenely violent and strange ones, especially from CareerBuilder.com (that heart that ripped itself out of the woman at her desk – hello Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!) and that giant manMouse in the Doritos one – completely bizarre.

Okay, I’m done for the day. Time to clean up and get ready for sleepy time!

I’m Searching for a River…

My dear friend VerNonica Dorothy Penny Andersen would instantly know what I’m talking about. But having seen the name I just typed for her, she would also instantly dropkick me to the ground too.

So yes, the “I’m Searching for a River” story. It’s an oldie from my high school days. Back in those golden days of yore, Roni and I would hang out quite a bit, especially with her family, who were just very cool people that exposed me to a lot of interesting Southern California stuff, mainly the awesomeness of the Sunset Strip, Hollywood, UCLA (I can’t deny that Roni’s mom’s absolute love of UCLA was a huge factor in my desire to go there), Malibu, Palm Springs, Tower Records, seeing movies properly, LaserDiscs (and ultimately to DVD)… it was a great time to be alive. That sounds silly, I know, but my last two years of high school were a LOT of fun. Anyways, that was just setup to this story – one day we were driving around when this groovy song came on over the radio, with a really nice beat and this great female voice singing about true love, and she kept singing that “Rivvveehhhh, I’m searchin’ for a Rivvvvehhhh, someone to set my heart free…..Riveh! IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII am searchin’ for a Rivvehhhhhh…..” Yes, I was totally in tune with this great R&B-flavored song and totally understood the metaphor of looking for a river and how that could be interpreted as love….. and Yes, I was a total retard who apparently needed to get his hearing checked! Because of course I’m referring to the song called “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige. And the song suddenly made so much more sense when Roni explained what the actual lyrics were…of course after she finally stopped laughing at me.

Why am I telling you this? Because the last few weeks have made me realize that I am certainly looking for more than just flings and such. If you can’t deal with these things, then feel free to go to the next paragraph. I’m obviously not going to get into graphic detail here, but I’ve just realized that I really do want to be in a relationship. Dating gets old and I really don’t think I have the patience to keep going on first dates. There have been a few things that have happened in the past month that have made me really think about who I am and what I am looking for and what I am expecting from others. There’s one guy who doesn’t have the time of day for me and is pretty much way more horrible than I am at communicating yet for some stupid reason I can’t get over him. Then there’s another who is just a great guy but I really just want to have him as a good friend as I really need those as well as a relationship, and frankly, having good friends is almost more important to me than the other stuff. I don’t know, just writing this still makes me realize how confused in the head I am about things. I’m worse than a girl I think. I think I know what I want but let’s be honest, I think I’m also quite clueless still when it comes to this stuff. I’ve obviously omitted a lot of the details here, especially with regards to the guy who is worse at communicating than I am. That whole experience has left me seriously messed in the head as I have no idea what is going on with him. Okay, I’m rambling. But this has been some of the stuff that has taken up quite a bit of my free time (the little I have) and has left me feeling kinda apathetic about the whole dating thing.

As promised, no more talk about my personal life. How about some pictures from my iPhone?

Jan 08 / Dec 07 – Random pics from my iPhone

Random thoughts on other things that have been going on in the past two weeks:

  • I saw Cloverfield this past weekend with Greg. AWESOME. I definitely enjoyed it more knowing where all that stuff actually was and having been to most of those places myself. Great disaster/monster movie that ended just as it should have. Lily Lives!
  • I also got drunk this past weekend after Cloverfield and after getting home. Ugh. Not a good idea to start with Beer and completely ignore the sage advice: “Liquor before Beer never Fear; Beer Before Liquor Never Sicker” I tend to get goofy, horny, and stupid all rolled up in one obnoxious package and I say and do things I really have no business doing. It’s certainly fun to be drunk but not fun to pay the price the next morning. Luckily no puking, just discomfort and realization.
  • Watched the movie ‘Once’ on DVD. Great boy-meets-girl-he-can’t-have-but-they-have-an-incredible-connection movie with amazing songs sung by the two main characters. It’s termed a musical but it’s definitely a different take on a musical. The songs (not ‘musical’-y, very much a folk/rock feel to them) are so beautiful and the final scene of the movie brings tears to your eyes due to a combination of the song that is playing (Falling Slowly, a genius song I must say) and the last lingering gaze we have of one of the stars. Go rent it.
  • Also saw ‘Million Dollar Baby’ a few weeks back and man that was depressing.
  • Work has been cool. I’m definitely doing pretty well there and am known as the King of Reports. Well, maybe not, but that’s the title I’ve given myself so I’m cool with it.
  • Shelly has returned and it’s so nice to have her back. Just having someone to talk to at the end of the day is such a nice thing. Especially after the month before with having no one to talk to!
  • I went to Mohegan Sun this past weekend because I could no longer keep away from the tables. It’s an amazingly huge casino and while I of course didn’t win money at craps, I was glad to have at least gotten to play. Next time though I need to spend the night as going up and back in the same day is 5 hours of driving and I was frickin’ exhausted by the time I got back.

Other than that, just a lot of me me me in terms of what’s been occupying my time. Hope you’re all doing well and I will probably not be updating till I get back from COLORADO!!!!!! Yay – I’m going back to go to SnoFest and to see all my wonderful friends!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!
