Twin Peaks: Up Close and Personal

As I briefly mentioned in an earlier post today, I noticed that my favorite local movie theater, the Vista, had a brand new marquee up today:  The World Premiere of Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces.  These “pieces” are the long-awaited deleted and expanded scenes from the movie, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, along with certain deleted scenes from the series.  They’ll all be available on the upcoming Blu-Ray that everyone can get in 2 weeks, but tonight was the World Premiere for the cast and crew to celebrate and enjoy what has been accomplished.  So yeah – I saw that marquee this morning and immediately tried to figure out just how I’d be able to get there.  My concerns were that the Vista is horribly situated for the non-invited (me) as there’s not much real estate to stand in as it’s fronted by Sunset Blvd, Hollywood Blvd and Virgil/Hillhurst.  I also figured it would be mobbed, and who knew when the event would actually start?

Anyway, during the day I was using Twitter to investigate and determined the event started at 7pm; but was that the actual showtime or when guests were supposed to arrive?  Unsure, and somewhat skeptical, after I got home, Larry helped convince me that we should just go for it.  So we walked over to at least take pictures – sure enough, when we got there a little before 6, the setup was in place to welcome the cast and crew, and there was a bit of a to-do going on.  Guess what!?  We timed it perfectly and managed to find a perfect spot to stand that kept us in security’s good graces AND positioned us so that we saw all the stars walk right by us.  IT WAS AMAZING.

Side Note:  Back in 1990 (I believe), when Twin Peaks received a ton of Emmy nominations for its first season, I went with my pal Melanie to the Pasadena Civic Auditorium where the Emmys used to be held in the hopes of seeing many of these same cast members.  NO dice then, when we were literally blocks away.  So you see, I just had to wait 25 years or so to get a good view of these guys!  TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Who Was There:

With no further ado – the pics:

This first set of photos was taken when we first got on the scene.  We had made it to the Vista and first approached from across the street, where Rudy’s Barbershop is located.  I wasn’t positive we’d even be allowed closer, but we had to take a shot.  So we got closer.  Took some pics over on the Virgil side of the street before security shooed us away for “blocking the sidewalk” – but then there was a section where other non-ticketed folks were standing, and it ended up being perfectly located.

Ray Wise (Leland Palmer)

The first to arrive and immediately it was already worth it.  I’ve already reported here on my mini-freakout over the fact he replied to me on Twitter, so seeing him in person was about just as incredible.

Angelo Badalamenti – Music Composer

His music is essential to Twin Peaks, as well as many of the other films he’s worked on.  If you’ve enjoyed Twin Peaks, you’ve likely done so in no small part due to Mr Badalamenti’s musical compositions.

Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer)

Oh, Sarah Palmer….her story is ultimately a tragedy in the series.  It’s kind of nice in a weird way to see her and Leland reunited and happy.  Yes, I know this is a TV show.  🙂  I captioned this in one of the photos, but when she arrived, there was a moment when she had just gotten out of her car and was by herself for a moment and I kind of sheepishly waved to her and she waved back.  I almost fell over in shock and happiness.  Then she got swarmed by autograph seekers and such, and that was that.  These pics are my memories, to be honest, so I didn’t need any autographs.

I wish I had known this at the time, but the attractive man in the green button-down shirt in the second picture is Brad Dukes, the author of Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks, which I’ve been reading and loving.

I think we all were a bit surprised to see him here – I’m not sure who all I expected but this was a fantastic surprise.  The Twitter investigation had only been able to say that Madchen Amick, Ray Wise and Sheryl Lee were attending, so everyone else was super-bonus.  And damn, the bonus was HUGE.

We ended up striking up a conversation with a fellow Twin Peaks fan who was also watching the festivities.  Ms. Amick was his favorite and so I took a pic of them kinda together – it’s wonderful how great she looks.  Shelly was a fun character and I especially loved when she and Gordon Cole struck up a relationship in the show.

I wasn’t sure if he would show up – but it was seeming that this was an occasion for everyone to make an appearance, if possible.  It’s quite exciting to see him in person and he just has an aura that intrigues you.  At this point in time, the cast and crew who were arriving now were kinda late so not much time for standing around for pictures.  Hence why I get less and less….I still got some good ones though.

Madchen Amick, continued

I think she was loving this part of the evening, plus she knew she was looking great.  Go on with your bad self, Ms Johnson!

Russ Tamblyn (Dr. Jacoby)

Freakin’ Dr. Jacoby showed up!  With his daughter Amber Tamblyn in tow too, sporting his trademark two-tone red and blue glasses.  So now I’ve seen Riff from West Side Story in person too!

Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer)

If it hadn’t been closing time and everyone getting ushered inside, I might have hoped to ask for a picture with Sheryl Lee – it’s Laura Palmer, for pete’s sake!!!  I tried to get a couple pictures but she was always moving so it was tough, but there’s one with her looking to the side that I really do like.  She looks good too; I’m really excited about the feature on the Blu-Ray with her, Grace Zabriskie and Ray Wise chatting – first as the Palmer family, 25 years later; second as themselves, reflecting on Twin Peaks.  SO EXCITED!!!!

Closing Time and Miscellaneous Shots on the Way Out

So yes, we also saw Penny Marshall walking in right around the same time as Sheryl Lee!  I’m not sure if there were others I missed, but all in all, I can safely say this was a pretty damn epic evening.  I got to see nearly all of the Twin Peaks cast and crew (no Kyle MacLachlan though) and very up close and personal.  It was awesome.   It seems unlikely this collection of actors and crew will happen again in the foreseeable future, so I feel lucky to have been a part of it in my own small way.  I fully expect to see me or Larry in other professional shots as I’m sure we unintentionally photo-bombed quite a few pictures!
