Saving Mr Banks

You know, it’s tough to write a post every day….especially when you’re feeling lazy. This was an especially lazy day too, as Larry and I spent the day with Fran but of course, the weather out here in New Jersey is terrible. It actually wasn’t as bad today as it was yesterday, temperature-wise, but as the day went on, it got colder and colder. So today? Started at 50, ended around 34 or so. Tomorrow? A high of 10. Maybe. GET US HOME.

Today though, we ended up going out to the movies, seeing Saving Mr. Banks. Saw it at a theater where each seat is a barcalounger – THAT’s a triumph of modern times. The movie? Much much better than I ever expected. I had read the various reviews with some harping on the fact that it’s a movie that clearly whitewashes the past, as the story is being told by Disney about the apparently notorious troubles that went into convincing P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, to release the movie rights of her book to Walt Disney. Despite knowing that and being a skeptical kind of person already, the movie is vastly entertaining. Emma Thompson is great as P.L. Travers while Tom Hanks IS Walt Disney, and the whole story about the development of the script and songs of Mary Poppins is very compelling. The flashbacks to P.L. Travers’ past are interesting peeks into her emotional baggage but really, the magic for me was when Emma Thompson was making the Disney folk jump through her hoops. She’s amazing in this role. My most emotional moment came when the team finally gets some positive emotion out of her when they play “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” for the first time….It’s such a great song and how could anyone NOT respond positively to it?

Anyway, another highly entertaining movie out there and another I’d happily recommend. Also, it was very cool to see real-life Disneyland after having just seen it in person a few days ago!
