E3 2015 and Video Game Excitement

Yes, E3 2015 was last week, but I forgot to process the pictures (ha, “process” – like I had to go to Walgreen’s or something) because of Disneyland excitement and such.  But because I had registered before leaving NBCU, my registration was still good and I took some time during an extended lunch break that past Tuesday to go give it a quick once-over.  As expected, the first day of E3 is a fucking overwhelming experience as it’s mobbed with people.  Mobbed.  I also was wearing my PwC clothes so while everyone else was comfortable in shorts or jeans, I’m in my khakis and button-down shirt – so not only was it mobbed, it was kinda sweaty.

Anyway, I made it through both of the main halls, first going to the Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft-dominated hall, which honestly wasn’t as cool as it has been in past years.  Nintendo has really done some cool boothing in the past but this time it was like a big ol’ eh.  Sony’s was basically the same layout as last year but just ridiculously mobbed, which was kinda the same story as Microsoft’s.

I enjoyed the game publisher’s setup in the other main hall much more.  That’s where the guys like Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda and more really put on a great show.  Again, I only was spending like an hour+ there, so I wandered my way around and quickly found some of the things I’m hyped about, especially the upcoming Fallout 4.   I wasn’t able to meet up with my fellow NBCU folks as they were spending most of the day there.  Even if I had caught up with them, I was on the turbo speed tour.

Honestly, you learn more details from online websites like Kotaku, as the real good stuff happens in those upfront presentations and closed-door sessions that mostly happen for videogame journalists.  But hey, it is still cool to walk around what is likely the best convention out there.  Especially if you love videogames.  Sidenote: I was hoping to get to the Dwell convention in late May, but due to our travels, that didn’t happen.  But it would’ve been awesome to be immersed in a fantastic modern design convention.

Pictures are here but I’m also going to link to some of the video teasers for games I’m particularly psyched for below the pictures…

June 16, 2015 – E3 2015 (Super Turbo Edition)

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

I love the Uncharted games so getting to play one on the next-gen PS4 will be exciting and hopefully a reason I’ll be happy to own one:

Final Fantasy VII – The Remake!

The remake that no one ever thought would really happen suddenly was announced to be happening!  Of course, the words being used are “in development” which means this isn’t going to be seen for years.  But still, how cool will this be to play again?

Mass Effect: Andromeda

I was a big fan of the Mass Effect series and knew that fourth game was under development – so it’s exciting to see an official announcement and name.  It’ll be interesting to see what the story ends up being about and what the timeline of the story is set in.  Holiday 2016 sounds promising, but I’m not holding my breath.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

I’m always in for a new Tomb Raider game, but the fact that it is XBox One exclusive for a while is wildly annoying.  Maybe a PC version will be released alongside it, but I’m guessing PC and PS4 ports will have to wait a little bit.  FEH.  I can be patient though, as there’s lots of games on my backlog to plow through.

and last but not least by a wide wide margin…..the game I can not wait to play later this year…..

Fallout Fuckin’ 4!!!!!!!

This was announced a few days before E3 actually started, managing to get a jump on the press cycle quite handily.  It’s so exciting to see as a real thing and the fact it’s coming out this fall is just….great.  I just will have to figure out a way to put in game time. Who needs sleep???

This Year’s E3!

I got to go a 3rd time to the Electronic Entertainment Expo thanks to some awesome rules pertaining to who can go, and yay, working for NBC allows you to go!   It’s an amazing event, especially if you like video games, which duh? in my case.  I had read a lot of the stories coming out from the sessions with each of the major players yesterday so none of the stuff was much of a surprise – it was more just an incredible experience to go see it all for myself.  I had an “Exhibitions Only” pass though, which means none of the shows for me, but I’m fine with that.

Anyway, this year’s E3 had some pretty cool reveals, including:

  • New Tomb Raider games!

  • A 4th Uncharted!

  • A new Assassins Creed, this time set in Revolutionary Paris, and only on next-gen consoles and PC

  • New Zelda on Wii U
  • Ubisoft’s The Crew, a massively-multiplayer racing game that allows you to race nearly anywhere in the country – I played it and it was incredible

  • Dead Island 2, a zombie survival game that I probably won’t play – BUT, the reveal trailer was entertaining as hell with a hot yet douchey guy running through Venice, CA and utter hell ensuing…

  • Super Smash Bros Wii U, a game I’m not really that interested in, but it was really fun to watch
  • Far Cry 4 – I’m currently playing Far Cry 3 and it’s fun as hell; this Himalayan setting in 4 looks stunning and yet again the situation looks like a lot of fun to play

  • A new Mass Effect in the works!!!
  • Mirror’s Edge 2 – the first one was such a beautiful game to play; kinda hard to actually “play” but a unique experience nonetheless
  • A remaster of Grim Fandango; I haven’t played this (and admitttedly, didn’t finish it back then) since it came out…adventure games rule
  • No Man’s Sky – this game looks so bizarre and all-encompassing, I can’t help but fall under its sway.  It’s jaw-dropping the things you can do in it based on the video, but I”m still not sure what “the game” is going to be

  • Grand Theft Auto V is FINALLY confirmed for release on PC as well as PS4 and XBone; I gave my PS3 copy to Trent, so I’m ready to be able to play it yet again

Most of that stuff I listed above?  I read about it online; as a holder of the pass I had, a lot of this wasn’t out for you to see.  Still is a fun experience though, and I took lots of pictures, as shown below. One of the things that was really cool was a photo-op George took up; the resulting bullet-time video is below the pictures…pretty damn sweet.

After today and the news I’d read about what’s upcoming for the various consoles….I admit that I’m much more open to getting not only a PS4 but also a Wii U.  There’s going to be some really fun games coming out for both….and I think I’ve waited long enough, dammit!

E3 2013

I couldn’t let this travesty stand – I realized while writing my E3 2015 post that all my other E3s had been formally documented on my site but because 2013 was one of my slacker years, it got skipped.  The pics are on my Picasa site but we have to have it here too.

This E3 in 2013 was the first one that the rest of the NBCU crew went to, as George and I had been able to go in 2012 and make everyone jealous.  It was a lot of fun to go with them and enjoy the spectacle with some new eyes.  Anyway – here are pics!

Pics-A-Palooza

There’s been a few sets of pictures that need to be posted since last I added pictures.  I’ll commentate as applicable and/or appropriate.

Let’s begin….starting with E3!  George, a coworker of mine at NBC, is a crafty guy and has some fairly wonderful connections. He’s also wily, and figured out how to get the right paperwork to validate we work at NBC and that it’s an entertainment company.  That sounds easy, but it really isn’t.  Anyway, we signed up for a free registration back in early April and from that point on, I was super excited about the beginning of June.  This is E3 people – the Electronic Entertainment Expo! Video games video games video games!

I must say, it was a cool experience, but some things I’ve learned:

  • If you are just a “regular” person and don’t have invites or meetings set up, it can be a fairly superficial experience.  You have to wait in line for potentially hours to even play some games or see some demo movies, and some of the very high-profile publishers like Bethesda and Ubisoft kept a lot of stuff behind closed doors.  Of course, you could read about it on Kotaku or Game Informer too, but still, it would’ve been nice to see it for myself.
  • Comfortable shoes are a must.  Even then, if you’re out of practice in the world of standing on your feet all day, it’s gonna suck.  I remember this from NAB last year too.  After a while standing on sore feet, even video games can cease to be interesting.  It’s been a long time since my days at Bookstar, that’s for sure.
  • Don’t think that the last day will be any less crowded than the first day.  George & I headed down to E3 on the first day (Tuesday) and took the Metro to get there (look at us, stewards of the planet).  Just had to go.  It was packed.  Worth going, for sure, but ridiculously crowded.  George had heard that the last day was better for getting a chance to play the games.  Went back on Thursday afternoon.  His theory was false.  Still packed.  And because we got there just a few hours before the expo ended, lines were now getting roped off at the end to prevent accidentally running over.  So get there early if you’re going  to go.
  • It was awesome to see these crazy-ass booths and displays.  Loved EA’s, as it had a huge arena feel and we even saw Snoop Dogg walk by with his security and entourage.  Ubisoft’s was just as loud and the size of the video screens was amazing there as well as for Activision’s.  Nintendo’s world was almost magical.
  • The Wii U is interesting.   Graphically it is very good. Not sure if I want to hold a giant controller screen though.  Also heard the battery life is dismal.
  • MUST PLAY ASSASSIN’S CREED III NOW.

Alright, here are my pictures from both days of E3:

The next week was my triumphant return to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.  Just in case you didn’t know where it was.  I’m full of help, I am.  I hadn’t been to a major league game since traveling through Baltimore on my way to the Azores.  My bud Ben Yarish met me there since he lived in the area and we went around the waterfront area and finally went to an Orioles game.  After that though, the latest baseball game I’d been to was in Colorado Springs at an Avalanche game (I think that was the AAA team there…).  As for Dodgers’ games though, I’m pretty sure the last one I went to was while in college.

My coworkers heard of my dream and decided it was a great idea for an after-work activity.  So Maj picked up 6 tickets and it was on.  I was very interested to see if much had changed at the stadium, and was surprised that the prices we paid were fairly reasonable, compared to what I knew it cost to go to a Yankees or Mets game in NYC.  Turns out, not much has changed from what I remember from previous trips.  Things of note:

  • Traffic is still just as stupid as it was over a decade ago.  Getting in was slow, but not rage-inducing.  Leaving the park was as I feared…and once it got to 30 minutes and we were still trying to get out….yeah….RAGE.   I had been thinking of taking the Dodger Express bus from Union Station but decided against it.  Not next time.
  • Dodger Dogs are still fucking awesome.  We got the Super dog which was all Farmer John beef.  That sounds dirty.  SO GOOD.
  • Baseball is still pretty boring.  It wasn’t until the 8th inning when the Dodgers came from 1 run behind the Angels and put runners on two bases and then the next guy hit a home run.  That was pretty cool.  Up until that point though…ooof.
  • Doing the wave is still awesome.  We were in the section of the main stadium right next to the outfield bleachers.  That’s where the wave typically originates from in a counter-clockwise pattern.  So we would always get wave action, but unfortunately the wave never really made a full circuit. People are lame.

Moviefest 2012

Meanwhile over the past few weeks, Larry & I have managed to catch a movie pretty much every weekend.  I have always wanted to do this and rarely ever get past the first weekend.  But we’re pretty diligent thus far.

  • The Avengers:  Great superhero movie.  Awesome characters.  Joss Whedon rules.
  • Battleship:  A Universal picture that ended up a massive flop….but I liked it a lot.  Entertaining and loved all the navy stuff.
  • Men in Black 3:  Mostly okay.  Could barely remember seeing it and had to dig through my Facebook timeline just to see what was between Battleship and Snow White!
  • Snow White & the Huntsman:  So disappointing.  Another Universal pic, but this one did well.
  • Prometheus:  I enjoyed this sci-fi flick, despite their being a few plot holes that epitomize “fridge logic” after thinking about it a little bit.
  • Rock of Ages:  Best bud Mila came up to see this with me & Larry as the three of us saw the Broadway show in NYC when she visited me back in 2009.  It was so wonderful to hang out with her as well as see the movie.  Good movie, but I would say safely that the Broadway version is probably a better venue for it.  Tom Cruise was amazing though.  Anyway, here’s a pic of Mila that I took when we were pre-gaming at the Misfit restaurant in Santa Monica:

Father’s Day 2012 in Santa Monica

Since being back in California, we’ve had people over a couple times, but not that much.  And our place is one that screams to entertain.  So when it came time for Father’s Day this year, I volunteered us immediately.  We had just gone to Stacie’s for Mother’s Day/Harv’s birthday, so it seemed fair.  Once we volunteered, Larry got motivated to make a stellar menu, and that he did.  We grilled two tri-tips, made mac & cheese, and then a plethora of appetizers, including crudite, pigs ‘n blankets, and chips & guacamole.  We also made chocolate chip cookies.  There was a lot of trial & error from previous meals and luckily, this dinner turned out fantastic.  Harv & mom came over as well as Stacie & Trent. Lots of drinking and laughing and dancing and Rock Band 3 playing commenced.  It was a lot of fun.  Here are pics:
