Damn Hype

Well, as much as I went into Mad Max: Fury Road with high expectations, it was perhaps unfortunate that I did so as the reality was that the movie wasn’t anywhere near what the reviews seem to be saying.  I’m not quite sure where all the raves really are coming from as while the movie is certainly enjoyable, I’m just not seeing how it’s a new action movie classic.  So while I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, because it’s not, there’s something lacking.

Max sure is pretty though

Larry mentioned that there is very little characterization that goes on in the movie while we were talking about it afterwards.  It’s true, and that’s probably a good point as to why the movie isn’t completely succeeding.  Sure, we see and hear Max’s internal struggles with losing his family, but it’s very disjointed and eventually it seems to be that it was in service of making sure he raises his hand at just the right moment to prevent getting an arrow in the face.  Imperator Furiosa also seems to be someone we feel for, and at one point, she deals some damage and vengeance, but we have no idea what made her so mad.  Sure, you can probably infer terrible things as the world we see is pretty fucking shitty, especially with Immortam Joe in charge.  But you don’t really care about these people.  Some of them end up getting accidentally characterized and you do care, then they die.

Fury-Road-Guitar-680x388Now, are the action scenes incredible?  Pretty much, yeah.  It’s widely known that these were all practical effects and it’s pretty amazing what is carried out.  And I’ll say that the final battle is pretty fucking incredible.  But I am not sold as to why it got the fucking unanimous glowing reviews it’s getting?   I guess that’s why I don’t get paid to write movie reviews!   I still love the trailer though, and that encapsulation of the movie’s best moments really is something else.
