New York, for a day

I love this picture. It’s the view from my hotel room, but I just love all the window lights. Looks like the background you’d see if someone wanted to have an”city” background.
Anyway, I’m here in the city for the night, then off to Connecticut for tomorrow afternoon, then back on my way home tomorrow night. The fabulous jet setter life!

Off to Scottsdale! Oh, More Pics too…

So for the rest of the week, I’m going to be in Scottsdale, AZ for a work event.  I just looked at the temperatures for the week – a jacket will not be necessary.  This weather reminds me why I’m in no rush to live in Arizona or to ever move back to Las Vegas.

So to get these photos out while they still are fresh in my head, here are the rest of the pics from this past week back East!

May 28, 2015 – LAX when on my way to Newark

This was the beginning of my journey.  It was also the beginning of a very shitty set of flights, leading to me getting very little sleep.  I have complained before about this fact.  Anyway, for my flight from LAX, I actually had to take a shuttle bus from the American Airlines terminal over to the American Eagle satellite terminal.  This bus gives you a tarmac-level view of the airport and it’s kinda cool!

May 30, 2015 – Larry’s Actual Birthday while also Jake’s 6th Birthday Party

There was a big family event happening on Larry’s actual birthday, so we celebrated Larry’s the night before and after.  We headed over to his cousin’s amazing house where a very nice barbecue was being held, and it was a perfect chance to catch up with a lot of his family I normally don’t see all that much.  I love them all and it was a blast.

May 31, 2015 – Seeing the Mad Men exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens

There is an AMAZING exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image all about the show Mad Men.  There are costumes, props, writers’ notes, etc all in an exhibition celebrating the show.  Incredibly and most impressively, the sets for Don’s office in the SC&P building as well as the old Draper kitchen were re-assembled here.  You can walk into them up to a point and it’s amazing.  All the little details you remember are in place too, like ashtrays, record players, and family knick-knacks.  A truly fascinating exhibit for a splendid show.

Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed in the exhibit.  Feh!  But I did get some of the museum’s exterior as well as the drive to Queens from Ft Lee and back.  A must see though if you get the chance (it’s there until September of this year!).

June 3, 2015 – Visiting Alyssa, Jon & Stacey in New Jersey

June 1 & 2 were mostly focused around work.  I went to Boston on the 1st (up AND back) and it was exhausting.  Then i went into the city for work on the 2nd, getting back that night for Fran’s birthday dinner at a great Italian restaurant, which was a lot of fun.

But on the 3rd, it was the day when Fran & Larry were going to pick Stacey up from daycare.  So while they did that, I worked from Jon & Alyssa’s house.  Once they got back to the house, we then went to dinner – again, lots of good food and drink while getting to spend some extra time with Jon & Alyssa, which we don’t get to do all that often.

June 4, 2015 – Thursday in NYC

Thursday is the new Friday, as always, when it comes to going out in NYC.  Larry and I went into the city on the bus together that day, but while I went to work, he met up with Treva and had some adventures over by the new Whitney museum, which pictures you can see included in this collection.  I met up with Larry after work and then we headed over to Gramercy Park Hotel to have a drink (or three) with our awesome pal, Amy, who we met back in 2011 on our first Med cruise.  So much fun.   Larry & I then headed to dinner at Pigalle, the scene of our first date nearly 7 years ago.  Where’d the time go????

June 5, 2015 – Morgan Library with Stuart & Treva

Friday night we met up with Treva & Stuart to close out our time back east in a proper fashion.  It’s always necessary to see these guys as they’re also the best.  The meeting point was at the Morgan Library, which was truly J.P. Morgan’s stand-alone library that he had built for himself.  It’s fascinatingly over the top.  The museum has some modern additions that make it quite a stunning space, as you’ll see in the pics.  Of course the old-school libraries are stunning in quite a majestic way too.  A Lincoln exhibit was there but it was fairly mobbed so I didn’t see all the writings there, but a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation I did see so that was cool.

After the museum we ate a fun taco place in the Murray Hill area (I think) and then grabbed dessert at the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.  The options for eating in NYC are endless and it’s wonderful.

June 6, 2015 – Going Home

Well, it was finally time to head home.  Honestly, I was more than ready for our own bed again!  I got back to LA first as we had booked our flights separately.  I ended up getting through a majority of a book that Nicki highly recommended, Ready Player One.  It’s realllly good and of course because it deals heavily in 1980’s pop culture and videogames, I’m totally invested.  It’s also a very fun story in and of itself, but the sheen of the 80s on it definitely makes it more interesting.

And the pictures are now caught up!  I’ll need to get some thoughts together on the movies I’ve seen over the past few weeks that I’ve neglected to write about, Pitch Perfect 2 and San Andreas.  Maybe tomorrow from Arizona!

Engaged! (the whole story)

We have a LOT to cover, don’t we?  When I last posted, well, if you didn’t see it on Facebook, then that update may have been a bit of a shock!  Yes, yes, I asked Mr. Larry to marry me, and happily, he gave the right answer.  🙂

So how did this all come about?  Briefly, it was just about time that we did this.  Because it was also coming up on Larry’s 40th, and we were going to be back in the New York area for it, why not make this a really great memorable time?  During the week leading up to our departure (we left Thursday of last week, Larry in the morning, me on the red eye that night) to Newark, I made an appointment at a local jeweler and found the right ring to give.  He had gone for a run to the bike path that afternoon and had no idea I had been late in getting back due to the side trip.  Of course getting the ring is just one thing, figuring out how to do a proposal is another matter entirely.

I’m not a madcap strategist nor an uber-romantic, so some kind of flash mob, Jumb-o-tron, or massive path of flowers was in the cards.  But I did know that I wanted the skyline of New York involved, so I moved forward on that.  We were having dinner on Friday night at the River Palm for Larry’s birthday, along with Fran & Joel and Alyssa & Jon.  I wanted everyone to come along though, and while I figured I could somehow convince Fran & Joel to go along with my fake story, I wasn’t sure Alyssa & Jon would.  So I told Alyssa what I was up to in order to make sure she’d come along while also sanity-checking if it would work in the first place.  She gave her thumbs up and so once I was in Newark after a horribly exhausting red-eye flight, I started dropping small hints about wanting to go back to the area where I used to live in West New York as it had the BEST view of Manhattan.  It really does.

After a wonderful dinner, the time came to see if my motive of wanting to see the city on a beautiful night from the West New York vantage point would work.  And happily enough, everyone was in!  It actually was a very very nice day unlike what ended up following the rest of the week.  So off we went to my old apartment area on Riverwalk Place and when we got to the shore, there was a nice clear area of the path in front of us.  I had Jon take a picture of me and Larry (which you can see leading off the pics below) and after that first pic, I got one my knee and asked Larry if he’d marry me.  I think I said some other things, but I honestly can’t remember the details.  The important thing was he did say yes.   🙂

A Cuban restaurant/club has opened in the area since I moved and it ended up being where we sat down for a celebratory bottle of champagne.  It was a great night and went pretty much according to plan.  Here are plenty of pictures:

First starting with the dinner at the River Palm, where we celebrated both Larry’s 40th and Fran’s 65th birthdays:

New York, New York!

I’m headed back east for some more training, but this time it’s in a city I am very well acquainted with: New York City!  Can definitely say I am looking forward to going back especially now that it isn’t the frozen tundra it was for awhile this winter. Even better, Larry is joining me there as his work wants him out there this week too, which is kinda nuts in terms of awesome timing.

If You Seek Amy

That’s the title of one of Britney Spears’ new songs and if you say it just right, it is also highly juvenile yet HILARIOUS.  I can’t believe one of her songs is titled that.

WELL!  Here’s where things stand now that it’s 2009 –

  • I now have TWO apartments and ONE house.  I have officially become a real-estate mogul.  Okay, that’s taking it a bit too far.  But right now my name is associated with the Riverwalk apartment in Jersey, my soon-to-be swank UWS apartment, and my house in Colorado.  Oy.   A lesser person would pass out from the stress.  Me?  I just develop panic attacks!  LOL.
  • Concerning the oh-so-awesome new apartment, I got the keys last week before New Years.   Before I went home to Los Angeles for Christmas (more on that later), I bought a new 52" Samsung flat-panel LCD TV which is effing AWESOME.  I was going to buy it from Best Buy, but those bitches had a) the nerve to not have a delivery date for it before JANUARY 20 (yes, still in our future) and 2) not even have the TV I wanted in stock in any of the 6 stores around the NYC area and iii) I know I mixed up the listing increments.  I did that for Jenny.  She has a love of the Bart that is the ultimate in unrequited love so I thought I’d give it some appreciation.  BWahahahahaqhahahahahahaha1!111111111!!!!!
    • I ended up using Crutchfield.com and man, I wonder why anyone would buy big-ticket electronics anywhere else.  I got the same price I would have paid for a lesser TV for the much higher-end model, FREE shipping, and no sales tax.  SahhhhWEEET.  They ended up delivering that this past Friday (Jan 2nd) to my empty apartment.  And it is awesome to behold.  I also bought from Crutchfield a matching TV stand and Larry & I built that yesterday and today, having fair to satisfactory success. I say that because the floor in my apartment is not what one would call ‘level’.  It took a bit of work to make it okay.  But once I put a lot more stuff in the place, it won’t look wrong.
    • Yesterday we went to Macy’s where I bought a new couch since I had sold all my previous couches before moving away from Colorado.  I got a Macy’s card and got it on 12-months same-as-cash, which is YAY!  Free shipping on the couch too, which is a 4-pc sectional.  Comfy.  I’ll get that this upcoming Friday, after…
    • …the movers come move me out of my current digs in West New York!  I set that up for Thursday which is all sorts of stress-inducing for me.  I hate moving with a passion.  I wish it was just over.  It soon will be, but still.  Hate it.
    • So come this upcoming weekend – well, I think I’ll have a pretty fucking awesome place.
  • Christmas in Los Angeles!  Yes – I flew back to Los Angeles from the 23rd through to the 28th.  It was so great to get back home and see Mom and Harv, as well as a whole lot of other friends and family.
    • The first day back, Harv picked me up and for dinner Mom had got us El Pollo Loco!!!!!  I heart El Pollo Loco and really wish it existed out here in NYC, just like I wish the Noodles chain from Colorado Springs was out here too.  <sigh>
    • The first family outing was on Christmas Eve when we partook in the Sperske annual Christmas Eve celebration, although many of the cousins/kids didn’t make it this year, so it was a relatively quiet time.  Doesn’t mean I didn’t have a good time though seeing all my aunts and the cousins who did show up.  It’s always fun when this family gets together!
    • On Christmas Day, we went over to our friends EB & Andrea’s house in Monrovia, and of course had EB’s world-famous prime rib.  I ate far too much and literally had a food headache after getting back home that night.  It’s a good thing, but not really.  But it was so delicious!
    • The day after Christmas, I got to spend some time with my buds Mila and Sveta.  Mila came over in the early afternoon and picked me up and we began our Memory Tour ’08 in style, first going to Target.  Mila likes to pretend she celebrates Christmas and definitely enjoys the after-Christmas sales on all holiday items.  Then we went to BURGER BASKET(!) which is one of our cherished childhood places to eat.  We would eat there all….the….time.  We also swung by MHS and took some pictures (all my pictures are still on my camera for a little bit longer – sorry!).  We then headed out to North Hollywood where Sveta lives and we crested the Hollywood Hills and drove around West Los Angeles and ate at our spot, The Stinking Rose ( a great garlic-y restaurant).  It is never a dull moment with all of us together.  I really really hope those two can make it out to visit me this spring.  It would be redonk.  After dinner we drove around some of the Hobie highlights, including around and in UCLA and Westwood as well as various locales throughout Los Angeles.  It was so strange to see that Bookstar Beverly Connection was actually gone and replaced by an Old Navy!!!!!!!
    • Finally on Saturday, we met up with some of Harv’s brothers and sisters-in-law at Mimi’s Cafe which was awesome as I hadn’t seen them for literally five years.  Then that afternoon my stister Stacie and her husband Phil and two of their boys came over for some Christmas fun.
    • As you can see, it was non-stop and it was EXHAUSTING.  I loved it, but seriously, that was not what anyone could call ‘relaxing’.
  • And of course, New Year’s in New York!  This year was a  whole lot better than last year’s (and the year before that, and so on and so on…..) as one, I had someone to kiss that wasn’t family or a friend.  Two, it wasn’t spent alone, which I’ve done far too many times to count as an adult.  Third, it was a blast to celebrate it in New York City.  Shelly’s co-worker (and our friend, of course) Claudia had invited us to where her husband, Gualti, is the head chef at, a restaurant called Revel, in the Meatpacking District.  So Shelly, Larry, and I went along with Claudia and it was a great time.  It was definitely cold as hell outside, and I feel bad for those poor schmoes who felt that Times Square was their place to be to ring in the new year.  No gracias.  But inside the restaurant, where we had a full four-course meal and fantastic wine, the atmosphere was fun and exciting.  And warm.   It was nice to not be crammed into a place where you can’t even sit.  It was especially nice to be amongst friends and of course, Larry.  So yes, I hope this New Year’s celebration was a sign of good things to come.
  • These last few days, it’s just been a matter of getting everything lined up for the move.  The TV is there and the cable guy was there this morning hooking up my high-speed internet and HD-DVR service.  Yay!  Thursday will be moving and Friday I’ll get a couch.  Saturday night is the loft party!!! Be there or be square (this is what cool people say when they throw parties….)  Larry & I even cleaned the windows today – ugh, those bad boys were Le Filthy.

Normally I do a wrap-up of the year, and I think I still will.  Probably tomorrow.  But I at least wanted to let you know I was still kicking around and hope that everyone is doing well too.  Here’s to a fantastic 2009!!
